Description
1871-72 ship’s log of the USS Wyoming, one of the most stories vessels in the country’s history. The USS Wyoming was a wooden-hulled screw sloop that fought on the Union side during the American Civil War. Sent to the Pacific Ocean to search for the CSS Alabama, Wyoming came upon the shores of Japan and engaged Japanese land and sea forces. On July16, 1863, Wyoming won the first-ever United States naval victory over Japan in the Battle of Shimonoseki Straits. After the war, and after repairs at Portsmouth, the Wyoming was recommissioned and sent to North Atlantic Station. Her ports of call included Havana, Key West, Aspinwall, Panama, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and others. It was during this tour that this ship journal was kept. The writer of this daily log, maintained from Nov. 14, 1871, to Dec. 31, 1872, was Midshipman Carlos Gilman Calkins, whose tenure aboard the Wyoming included the hunt for the CSS Alabama.
