Description
1898 Spanish American War scrapbook of Hiram Price Collier, married to Katherine Robbins Delano, the last surviving member of the Delano family and aunt of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Hiram served in 1898 on the USS Prairie which supported the blockade on Cuba. Scrapbook includes copies of various orders and the letter that had accompanied his bronze medal. Journal entries throughout commenting on the period black and white photographs of various American ships working the blockade, contemporary political cartoons, maps, and various magazine illustrations related to his service. Throughout the journal are frank comments regarding his experiences in various ports,including a reference to the horses in Puerto Rico as “cadaverous looking ponies” and goes on to say “As in all catholic countries they are abominably mal-treated.” and multiple complaints about General William Rufus Shafter. A down to earth and interesting read. Housed in a custom protective slipcover. Overall approx. 10-1/4″ x 13-3/8. This item can be shipped in-house.
