Description
Smith 50 caliber single-shot break action breech-loading carbine, marked “MANUFACTURED BY / AMN. M’CH’N WKS. / SPRINGFIELD, MASS†and “ADDRESS POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / BALTIMORE U.S.A.†on left side of receiver. Serial #6349. Octagonal-to-round barrel approximately 21-1/2″, overall length 39″. Depressing a latch located in the forward part of the trigger guard allowed the barrel to tilt downward and forward, exposing the chamber for loading. Fitted with saddle bar and ring on the left side. Walnut stock with visible inspector two cartouches. The Smith carbine was a key Union cavalry weapon during the American Civil War, issued to cavalry regiments including the 1st Massachusetts, 7th PA, 11th Illinois, and 3rd West Virginia Cavalry.
