Americana Exceptional Auction
Lot 52:
Description
Quarter plate ambrotype image of a seated black woman with an unusual costume. Wide brim hat with patterned fabric tie, dress with multiple fabrics including plaid pattern and accented with fringe. From the sheen caught by the photographer the dress appears to be taffeta. The woman is wearing lace fingerless gloves and holds a feather fan. Brooch at her neck and ring on left index finger accented in gold. Although the image is of unknown origin there is a possibility the sitter is of Native American Indian or Mexican heritage. Mid 1800’s, circa 1850, pre Civil War antique image, crisp with nice contrast. Overall plate is approx. 3-1/2″ x 4-1/2″. This item can be shipped in-house. Multiple lot combined shipping may require 3rd Party shipping.
