Description
Ornate gilt silver niello Thai bowl. Presented to Lt. Gen. William P. Yarborough from the future King Rama X of Thailand. Yarborough was one of the U.S. Army’s most decorated figures in special warfare and a key architect of U.S.-Thai military relations. Though retired from the U.S. Army when he received this in 1999, Yarborough remained an influential figure in international military affairs and a respected ally of Southeast Asian leaders, including the Thai monarchy. Measures about 6-1/2″ diameter and 3-3/4″ high. Provenance: Consigned by a long-time personal friend of General Yarborough, one who delivered a eulogy at the general’s 2005 funeral. Included is an image of Yarborough with the bowl and accompanying booklets. Also included is a photograph of the consignor with the Crown Prince, whose visit to the general the consignor orchestrated. Also included is the personal card of then-Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand, who later personally attended the general’s memorial service in April 2006. And, finally, the first page of a letter written from the general to the consignor thanking him for his handling of the Crown Prince’s visit.
