Description
Rare 18th century English work on medicine with an emphasis on women’s health, obstetrics and reproduction, falsely attributed to Aristotle and titled: “The Works of Aristotle, The Famous Philosopher. In Four Parts. Containing I. His complete masterpiece. II. His experienced midwife. III. His book of problems. IV. His last legacy”, A New Edition, Philadelphia Printed for the Booksellers, MDCCXCVIII (1798). Presumed to be written by William Salmon (1644 – 1713). His self professed extensive knowledge of the “Physick” led Salmon to produce multiple books. Perhaps the pseudonym was necessitated by his contemporaries’ regard of him as a quack who trained with a “mountebank”, learning to perform sleight of hand tricks and compound curatives. Original leather binding with red spine label. 4-1/4″ x 6-7/8″. This item can be shipped in-house.
Condition
A secure but well used copy of an early printing. Binding and pages are secure, corners are bumped, spine with wear, overall shelf wear. Pencil on front end and fly papers, overall foxing and water stains to pages, some pages with tears but no missing text. See images for details.
