Description
Engraved and hand-colored map of the county of Essex by noted English cartographer John Seller, measuring approximately 7-1/2″ x 7-1/2″. Titled “Essex by J. Seller” within a decorative cartouche, the map features towns, rivers, and neighboring counties including Kent, Suffolk, Hertfordshire, and Middlesex. Includes a “Scale of Miles” and directional indicators along the margins. This example displays early hand-coloring in red, green, and ochre tones. Paper shows evidence of age with water staining, toning, and edge wear, including paper loss along the bottom margin, not affecting the map. A finely detailed late 17th-century English county map by one of the earliest official hydrographers to the Crown.
