Description
Civil War era tintype of a Confederate soldier wearing a plaid “Olustee Battle Shirt”, holding a Sharps carbine rifle. Seated man holding his weapon, with a blanket draped over his lap. These plaid shirts were common in the lower south and are associated with the Battle of Olustee by modern collectors. Economically depressed areas such as Florida commonly saw troops resorting to homemade clothing of easily attained materials such as the plaid cotton seen in this photograph. Buttons and whatis assumed to be a CSA belt buckle are highlighted in gold. Period thermoplastic gutta percha display frame. 1/6th plate, overall approx. 3-1/3″ x 3-3/4″ with frame.
