Tintype 1/4 plate photograph image of a Union soldier in uniform holding a bayonet rifle. Full length portrait of a man with a backdrop painted with a palm tree and tents flying an American flag. Presumed to be a Savannah, Georgia studio, possiblytaken at the end of Sherman’s March to the Sea. A note with the portrait identifies the soldier as Luke R. Russell of Rollinsford, New Hampshire, assigned to Company G. Five cent tax stamp on the back of the plate with the initials J. J. Beautifulclear image, hand colored with tinted cheeks, gold gilt accents on hat badge, Union eagle breastplate, buttons, and belt buckle, highlighted eyes, and blue tinted pants. Case approx. 3-3/4″ x 4-3/4″. Good condition, some scratches on image including near the ear between the bayonet and cheek. Case with typical wear and repaired hinge.
