Description
Circa 1860, British infantry army, 72nd military Regiment Highlanders carved and scrimshaw ivory button cleaner tool owned by soldier Thomas Adamson, #3759. Also included is the soldier’s monthly settlements and account booklet, dated 1861. Cleanermeasures approx. 7 1/8″ long x 1 5/8″. Historic note: The 72nd Highlanders were sent to India in 1858, immediately after the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Their deployment was part of a broad British effort to reinforce control over the subcontinent.They were involved in post-rebellion pacification, reinforcing British authority and helping to reorganize the colonial administration under the new rule of the British Crown (as the East India Company had been dissolved in 1858). The regiment remained in India throughout the early 1860s. Please note: The item is carved from antique, pre-ban African elephant ivory. The item can be shipped only where allowed by law.
