Description
Original U.S. land patent dated August 10, 1827, issued to Abraham Baer of Steubenville, Ohio, and signed by U.S. President John Quincy Adams and Commissioner George Graham. This cash-entry grant reflects Baer’s purchase of federal land under the Land Act of 1820. The recipient is likely Corporal Abraham Bair, who served in Captain James Downing’s Ohio Militia company during the War of 1812. (A Private David Bair, likely a relative, served in the same unit.) The spelling variation of the last name is consistent with 19th-century recordkeeping. Document measures about 9-1/2″ x 15-1/2″. Adams and Graham signatures are unconditionally guaranteed to be authentic, not secretarial. John Quincy Adams was the last U.S. president to sign landdeeds himself.
