Description
Circa 1750-1850 samurai helmet. A 62-plate iron sujibachi kabuto (ridged helmet bowl) with prominent hoshi rivets (raised rivets) and a multi-tiered chrysanthemum tehen kanamono (top opening fitting). The five-lame shikoro (neck guard) is finishedin red lacquer and laced in tightly spaced navy silk cords using the kebiki-odoshi method. Fukigaeshi (ear flaps) feature gilt-brass trim and floral-patterned egawa (decorated deerskin). Interior is signed “Joshu-ju Yasukane saku,” identifying themaker as Yasukane of Joshu (modern-day Gunma Prefecture), affiliated with the Myochin school. Paired with a ressei menpo (fierce-expression face mask) with detachable nose and a four-lame tare (throat guard), also red lacquered and silk-laced. A high-quality matched kabuto and menpo set from the mid to late Edo period. Fairly good-sized, as it would fit about a size 7-1/4 to 7-3/8 head. (TAGS: Edo. Samurai. Armor. Kabuto. Helmet. Menpo.
