Description
Rare, original offset lithograph poster designed by illustrator Arthur Szyk (Polish/American, 1894-1951), a Polish-born Jewish artist. Published by John Wyeth & Brother, Inc. for the U.S. War Department. The artwork features caricatures of Axis leaders General Hideki Tojo, Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, used to promote venereal disease prevention among U.S. servicemen. Tojo says, “American soldier could catch it with ease,” followed by Hitler’s response, “But prophylaxis prevents diseas.” Part of the Army’s wartime medical campaign, this poster links personal health to military readiness. Approximately 17″ x 23″. Framed to 18-1/4″ x 24-1/4″. Printed in the U.S.A., 1943, wartime propaganda. Provenance: From the estate of Signalrps physician who served in WWII. Presents very fine.
