Description
US Model 1870 single-shot trapdoor breechloading rifle in .50-70 Government caliber, manufactured at Springfield Armory. Lock plate marked with the U.S. eagle and “U.S. SPRINGFIELDâ€; breech door marked “1870 / U.S.â€. Barrel serial no. 1558, with matching number on the receiver. Breechblock stamped “1870†above the eagle’s head, lockplate dated 1865, indicating production using earlier Civil War-era components. Barrel length 30″, overall length 48-3/4″. Standard rear sight, steel buttplate, and walnut stock marked “245†on the right side. The Model 1870 represented one of the early U.S. Army .50-70 trapdoor conversions, developed from the Allin system that adapted muzzle-loading rifle-muskets to breechloading cartridge use. These arms were issued during the early Indian War period (1870s) and served as a transitional weapon between Civil War percussion arms and later .45-70 models. Condition
Finish has a gray-brown patina. Bore is clean and shiny with visible rifling. Stock has age appropriate wear. Small hairline at the rear of the right lock plate. See images.
