Description
U.S. Springfield Model 1863 Rifle manufactured at the Springfield Armory in 1863. Barrel measures 40″, 59″ overall. A single-shot, muzzle-loading percussion lock system chambered in .58 caliber. Key markings include “1863” stamped on both the lock plate tail and the barrel tang, along with “U.S./SPRINGFIELD” and an eagle motif on the lock plate. “VP” with eagle on barrel. Spread-winged eagle on bolster. Stamped “16” on stock. This model saw extensive service with the Union Army during the American Civil War. Condition
The finish shows significant wear. The barrel has lost most of its original bluing, presenting a silvery-gray, aged patina. Stock has age appropriate wear, no cracks found. Bore rifling is visible with minimal dark spots. See images.
