Tome Premier only of the French translation of John Adams’ Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America (1787-88). Issued during the French Revolution, this edition reflects European engagement with American constitutional theory. Translated and annotated by M. de La Croix, Professor of Public Law at the Lycee. Adams, then U.S. Minister to Britain and later Vice President, argued for a balanced system of separated powers, a central principle in shaping both American and European political thought.
