Description
A most remarkable example of Nantucket basketry by Stephen S. Gibbs (American, 1896-1974). Gibbs and his wife operated a basket shop from 1954-1974, and according to the Nantucket Historical Association, Gibbs’ baskets "are among the finest woven a nd highest quality of this time period." This example — another of which has not been found online — has both a carved whale AND a harpoon on the lid. Stamped with Gibbs’ mark on the bottom. Accompanying this gem is a letter on Gibbs’ letterhead, dated January 1962, requesting payment for the basket in the amount of $103.50. 9x 7 x 5.5
