Description
Civil War era ninth plate daguerreotype of a young Southern girl. According to a note, found behind the photograph, dated 1863 and inscribed, “a colored girl one of my pupils at Hampton Virginia 1863, P. (illegible).”, the girl may be Black or of mixed heritage. Hampton was the home of Fort Monroe and the so-called Great Contraband Camp, as well as a school for enslaved peoples, free blacks, and mullattos. This school became Hampton University. The Emancipation Oak, where the school began, became the site of the first Southern reading of the Emancipation Proclimation in 1863 and still stands as a powerful symbol. Overall good condition with some crazing across the image and one corner of the case chipped. See images.
