Description

Watercolor on paper by Milford Zornes (American, 1908-2008) showing Southwestern themed silhouette studies: women with baskets, cowboys on foot and horseback (and seated), cattle, sheep, chickens, a dog, birds in flight, and — of all things — a giraffe. Composition arranged as separate vignettes across the sheet in transparent washes, typical of Zornes’s style. Inscribed and signed by the artist at lower right, dated 1990. (Though decidedly a Western U.S. themed painting … with one noticeable exception … this was evidently painted on a visit to Ireland, possibly commissioned there. Below his signature, Zornes has written “Lisdoonvarna,” which is a town in County Clare.) Zornes was a leading California Scene painter and WPA-era watercolorist whose work is held by major institutions, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Sight size 19″ x 29″, professionally matted (with inscription cut-out) in 29″ x 37-1/2″ frame. Also includes an attached photo of the artist, presumably on his Ireland visit. (As far as we can tell, there’s no giraffe in the photo.) This item will need to be shipped by a packing company of your choice. We maintain a list of reliable shippers, or you may choose your own.
