Manuscript financial ledger belonging to Joseph W. Allyne of Boston, dated January 1, 1852. Entries are written in fine period penmanship and record daily personal and professional expenses and receipts through the year, including payments for rent, clothing, board, subscriptions (including to the “Art Union” and “Shakespeare”), daguerreotypes, travel to Florence, and other detailed purchases. Bound in marbled boards with red leather spine and corners, measuring 7-3/4″ x 5-1/4″. Interior pages feature blue ruled paper with clear columnar accounting. A later ink notation on the title page identifies Allyne as “my great uncle.” TAGS: 19th century ledger, Boston history, personal finance journal, antebellum manuscript, 1850s Americana.
