Description
“Report to the President of the United States on Improvements and Policy of Maintenance for the Executive Mansion Grounds.” Olmsted Brothers, Landscape Architects, Brookline, Massachusetts, October 1935. Finely bound in green half leather over marbled boards, gilt-ruled with raised bands; spine titled “Improvements and Policy of Maintenance for the Executive Mansion Grounds.” Title page as shown; illustrated with photographic plates of the White House grounds and views related to proposed landscape planning. In cloth slip case. Prepared for the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration by the successor firm to Frederick Law Olmsted. Produced in only a handful of copies for government use, surviving examples are extremely scarce. Provenance: From J.B. West to Clark Dobson & John Horner. West served as the White House Chief Usher from 1957-1969. Dobson and Horner were personal friends of West’s. Horner was an Army major attached to the WHMO (White House Military Office) during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. This item can be shipped in-house.
