Original 1862 letter from J.B. Stonehouse, Assistant Adjutant General of New York, addressed to Henry T. Spinner regarding his efforts to secure a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant during the Civil War. Handwritten on official letterhead of the New York Adjutant General’s Office, the letter declines Spinner’s request to be mustered without the required enlistment paperwork, but offers guidance: If Spinner can collect at least 20 more of the 76 men he originally recruited-some of whom had already been transferred to the 165th New York Infantry Regiment (“Duryea’s Zouaves”) — he would then be eligible for officer rank. A rare glimpse into the bureaucratic process behind Civil War officer appointments and the challenges of recruitment during 1862. Letter measures about 9-1/2″ x 7-3/4″ folded along left side.
