Description
Dated March 22nd and 23rd, 1836, double-sided morning reports of the 1st Regiment, Infantry, commanded by future U.S. President Zachary Taylor, then a colonel. Taylor signed and dated the top of each page. The report for the 22nd was countersigned at the bottom by George H. Pegram, 2LT. This document dates from his time at Fort Crawford — when Taylor was “between wars.” He had just participated in the Blackhawk War of 1832, and he was soon to enter the 1837 Second Seminole War in Florida. (Historically noteworthy, though coincidental, is the March date: In that same week, more than 1,200 miles south of Fort Crawford, Col. James Fannin and more than 400 soldiers of the Texan army surrendered to Mexican forces, only to be executed a few days later on the orders of Mexican general Santa Anna, in what has become known as the Goliad Massacre. As much as the Battle of the Alamo, this event galvanized support for Texas independence, ultimately won by Sam Houston at the Battle of San Jacinto.) This item can be shipped in-house.
