Lot 253:
Description
1856 Republican ballot headed “Republican Ticket,” naming John C. Fremont for President and William L. Dayton for Vice President. Iowa presidential electors Daniel F. Miller and Henry O’Connor are listed, along with congressional candidates W.M. Stone and Samuel A. Russell. Printed on thin paper, these tickets were supplied to voters for direct deposit into ballot boxes before adoption of the secret ballot. The verso bears a handwritten inscription: “Ticket I voted, Nov. 4, 1856, my virgen [sic] vote.” A scarce Iowa example from the first Republican presidential campaign, preserving both electoral slate and personal voting record. Fascinating note indicating that it was a first-time voter who cast his vote for the first-ever Republican presidential candidate. This item can be shipped in-house. Multiple lot combined shipping may require 3rd Party shipping.
