Description
Extensive handwritten manuscript in ink, 280 pages, prepared in 1845 at Princeton by Edward F. Drayton (B.A. 1845, later M.D. Jefferson Medical College, U.S. Navy Assistant Surgeon). Titled Natural Philosophy, the volume is richly illustrated with finely executed ink and wash diagrams of scientific apparatus, balances, compasses, air pumps, thermometers, micrometers, and early steam engines. The work presents Drayton’s systematic course of study in natural philosophy, with chapter headings outlining the breadth of mid-19th century science: Somatology, Mechanics, Hydrostatics and Hydrodynamics, Pneumatics, Heat (including the steam engine), Sound, Electricity and Magnetism (with Galvanism), Light and Radiant Heat, and Meteorology. A remarkable pre-Civil War scientific notebook, combining precision illustration with comprehensive lecture transcription, documenting both Princeton’s curriculum and Drayton’s preparation for a medical and naval career.
