Description
Pair of cream-colored table lamps that sat on the bedside tables in the Rose Room (aka The Queen’s Bedroom) during the Kennedy administration. Maker unknown. The lamps are pictured in multiple photos of that room, most clearly in the January 1961 issue of National Geographic (page 29) — see photo. They measure 28″ high to top of harp, and 19″ high to top of socket. Interesting historical note: Jackie’s renovation of the Rose Room happened in Spring of 1962, and these were photographed by Nat Geo in 1960, which makes it most likely that the lamps were there during the Eisenhower administration. One distinguished guest who stayed in this guest room during Ike’s tenure was Queen Elizabeth II. Also, it is well-documented that JFK and Jackie slept in the Rose Room while the White House’s master suite was being renovated. These lamps were, in all likelihood, switched on and off by President Kennedy, Jackie and Queen Elizabeth. Provenance: From Jackie Kennedy to J.B. West. From J.B. West to Clark Dobson & John Horner. West served as the White House Chief Usher from 1957-1969 and was very close to the first families, particularly first ladies Mamie Eisenhower, Jackie Kennedy and Lady Bird Johnson. Dobson and Horner were personal friends of West’s. Horner was an Army major attached to the WHMO (White House Military Office) during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations.
