Description
Ancient Roman bronze situla (a bucket or pail), about 8-1/2″ high to rim and 10-1/2″ in diameter at the lip. Original Smithsonian tag and inventory number written on the body. Smithsonian catalog description reads: “With convex bottom, intended to rest on a stand or tripod … the overarching handle and ears through which it passes are elaborately chased with floral and geometrical designs … the ears are made in openwork.” Provenance: Originally in collection of Baron d’Usses, purchased by F.B. Spiridon (New York), then by Eleanor Magruder, inherited by Magruder family members, consigned by Magruder’s great-grandchild. History is shown in Smithsonian accession catalog 28776 (item was on loan to the Smithsonian Institution from the 1890s until it was deaccessioned in the 1960s). Listed in accession catalog as object number 170350 and pictured in photographs, with Smithsonian stamps on backs of photos.
