Description
French enlisted cuirassier helmet, Model 1870, featuring a steel skull with gilt brass crest, lion-head bosses, and scaled chinstraps. The comb is adorned with a tall black horsehair mane, and the base of the plume features a detailed Medusa-head emblem cast in high relief. The frontal flaming grenade motif includes oak leaf accents. Retains its original liner, now fragile with age. While introduced in the 1870s for heavy cavalry, this type was still worn by cuirassier troopers in ceremonialand early wartime roles during World War I, prior to the adoption of the Adrian helmet in 1915. Age appropriate wear with some oxidation to the exterior of the helmet, red plume has been glued at some point in time. Interior leather liner has some loss.
