March Exceptional Estates Auction
Lot 50:
Description
Lithograph on paper with abstract figure and cat, after "La femme au chat (Portrait cryptique de Paul Eluard)." (Painted August 30, 1937.) Signed in pencil lower right and numbered 2/100. Image measures 13-1/2" x 11" frame measures 26-1/2" x 20-1/2". Removed from frame, the paper backing of which — as with Lot #49 — has a Marshall Field art department label, also dated 9-14-67. Frame components will be included at buyer’s request. Provenance & note: From a Florida Modern art collection amassed beginning in the 1950s in Michigan. All proceeds from the sale of this item will go to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Wis. Many of the important art pieces in the sale are from this same lifetime collection. This item will need to be shipped by a packing company of your choice. We maintain a list of reliable shippers, or you may choose your own.
Condition: See images. The litho was mounted — presumably in 1967 by the conscientious conservators in Marshall Fields’ art department — on mat with strips of regular masking tape (!). The tape has been trimmed, but not removed (unless it fell off on its own).
