Description
Etude pour la Suite des Déjeuners III, graphite on paper by Pablo Picasso (OPP.59:608; PP.59:263; Z.XIX:42), signed Picasso, dated 10.8.59 and numbered III. Perforated sketchbook paper measures 13" (to outside edge of perforation) x 16-1/2". (See Sotheby’s listing of Dejeuners II: https://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2013/impressionist-modern-art-day-sale-l13004/lot.305.html). On verso, the upper left corner has faint notation: "010047" over "61064," the significance of which — if any — is unknown. Frame is 28" x 30". There is a gallery tag from Janie C. Lee Gallery in Houston, with "77.85" written in pen upper right of label. Provenance: From a Florida Modern art collection amassed beginning in the 1950s in Michigan. Purchased from Janie C. Lee Gallery. Prospective bidders are encouraged to examine the piece in person, if possible, or contact Blackwell for any additional information. The collector passed away in 2024, and he kept no significant records of his older pieces. While we believe the sketch to be authentic, there is no third-party authentication or additional documentation available. Note: All proceeds from the sale of this item will go to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Wis. Many of the important art pieces in the sale are from this same lifetime collection. This item can be shipped in-house.
Condition: See images. Paper is in very fine condition, with minor spots here and there, but no damage. There are a few short perforations along the bottom. Visible from the front and back — more prominently on the back — is a blue ink stain along the right edge. There are a few spots on the back that are not visible on the front. Paper is hinge mounted along the top with three strips of tape, presumed to be archival. Frame is missing its original glass (as obtained from Janie C. Lee Gallery), and it presently has a plexiglas pane. Please contact us for more information or to arrange an in-person examination of the piece.
