Description
Christmas letter from Union soldier (name appears to be W.N. Nelson, but illegible) to his sister in Haverhill, Mass. From Halls Hill, Va., dated December 27, 1861. During this time, General Fitz John Porter (who commanded the soldier’s division) had his troops guarding Washington, D.C. Letter mentions General McClellan, as well as the Ninth Massachusetts Volunteers (part of the Irish Brigade). It ends with "If anything occurs of interest while I am on picket or I get a sight of a rebel, I will write when I get back." Letter open measures about 8" x 10". Includes stamped cover, as well as a Matthew Brady photograph of Lincoln, Allan Pinkerton and MG McClernand at Antietam in 1862. (This photo, while a photograph and not a print, is likely from the later 19th to early 20th century.) This item can be shipped in-house.
