Description
Burnside Fifth Model percussion carbine, receiver stamped “BURNSIDE PATENT MODEL OF 1864.” Serial #15619 on both receiver and breechblock. Stamped “BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. PROVIDENCE R.I.” on right side of frame. Barrel is marked “CAST STEEL 1864.” Inspector cartouche visible on left side of stock. Round barrel approximately 21″ long, 39″ overall. Manufactured circa 1863–1865 under U.S. Ordnance contracts, this model was widely issued to Union cavalry regiments including the 1st Rhode Island, 1st New Jersey, and 3rd Indiana Cavalry. Standard .54 caliber chambering using the patented conical brass cartridge designed to seal the breech. Condition
Finish has a brown patina. Stock has multiple dents and scratches, no cracks. Missing two screws in receiver. Missing sling loop on stock. Barrel rifling visible with oxidation. See images.
