Description
19C handmade wood rifle box, measuring approx. 54″ x 3-1/2″ x 8″. Constructed of wood with hinged lid, painted in traditional “haint blue,” a color long used in the American South on porches, shutters, and outbuildings. Folklore held that this pale blue warded off evil spirits, known as “haints,” by tricking them into mistaking the surface for sky or water, and also deterred insects and birds from nesting.
